Building a
Serverless Data Pipeline

Bringing data in from external sources, handling updates to databases and notifications to external systems: this talk is a case study of building a simple stackoverflow dashboard application in a fun and practical way. Come to this session for an overview of how we built a serverless pipeline to pull in data and serve as the backend behind the stackoverflow dashboard I built for my team of Developer Evangelists. With data coming in from an external API plus updates to the data after it has arrived, there were some design decisions to make. I'll share those decisions and talk about the ones we've iterated on and might alter in the future. This talk is suitable for developers of all technical stacks.

In machine learning, training large models on a massive amount of data usually improves results. Our customers report, however, that training such models and deploying them is either operationally prohibitive or outright impossible for them. We created a collection of machine learning algorithms that scale to any amount of data, including k-means clustering for data segmentation, factorization machines for recommendations, time-series forecasting, linear regression, topic modeling, and image classification. This talk will discuss those algorithms, understand where and how they can be used, and our design choices. We will show how to invoke large-scale learning from Amazon SageMaker, or Amazon EMR, and host the solution. Finally, we will see how to create new algorithms which operate in this model using Docker containers.

I will also share some tricks to help you with the huge increase of traffic typical in Black Fridays.

We are used to relying on contracts as recovery devices, made up to protect us when things go wrong: "read, this is what we said", or "read, this is what we expect from you!". This is definitely not enough. Knowledge work needs a way deeper level of collaboration which happens *despite* usual contracts rather than thanks to those. We don't know anything better than a positional negotiation style: they say 1000, we say 500 and we hope to meet somwhere around 750, losing energy, time, money(!) and, ultimately, the will to do our best. If there are healthy negotiation principles, what happens if we take them to the extreme, by learning the purest lesson from every past project? Is there any chance to put better contracts in place, meant to help us develop and deliver more value together? I call that chance "Extreme Contracts" and I am not afraid to tell what happened when we tried them out.

GitOps and Automium: a new paradigm for software defined operations

Let's face it: devs and ops don't love each other. And the reason is because they basically spoke different languages, so far. But what happens when you have the devs teaching the ops how to code the infrastructure, and the ops teaching the devs how infrastructure works? Here's how we made DevOps a reality at Enter Cloud Suite, and how we are providing the outcomes to our customers. We built a service called Automium to automate continuous deployment, using bare metal, VMs, containers or serverless. And, guess what? There's no lock-in, it's multi-cloud (really, no marketing BS here).

Out there there are a lot of “closed” source products for developing messaging and IoT based solutions. What if you want to have more control on your platform ? The EnMasse and Eclipse Hono projects are the answers ! EnMasse is a totally “open” source messaging-as-a-service platform which can be deployed on-premise, in the cloud or even in an hybrid scenario. At the same time it aims to be highly scalable in terms of throughput and the number of connections, based on standard protocols like AMQP 1.0 and MQTT and provides different patterns for messages exchange. It represents the best choice as underlying infrastructure for Eclipse Hono which provides a framework exposing the main IoT APIs like telemetry, event and command & control other then handling devices registration and their authentication. During this session we'll see the main concepts of these projects and how they fit together in order to provide a complete platform for and end-to-end IoT solution.
